Background Information

            Sandy Hook, New Jersey is a common place for people to visit during the summers.  A chapel is located on Sandy Hook, overlooking the Sandy Hook Bay.  Behind the chapel is uneven land that leads to the water.  There is a small beach and many unorganized dunes and plants.  The land has been eroded because of storms and changes in sea levels over the years.  A bulkhead had been in place, but it has withered down and is now completely ruined.  The land is very uneven, and there is a three feet drop down from the land the chapel is on to the beach.

            Many people travel to Sandy Hook in the summer.  People come to lay on the beach, as well as bike in the trails.  Numerous people come to fish.  Fishermen commonly fish off of the beach or shore on both the bay side and ocean side of Sandy Hook.  Other people like to come and walk around and enjoy the scenery.  Looking from Sandy Hook out to Atlantic Highlands and Highlands is very pretty, and people often sit to watch.  The National Parks Service is also involved.  They are responsible for the maintenance of Sandy Hook, as well law enforcement under the United States Government.  If anything were ever to be built, builders, architects, and engineers would also be involved.

            As of right now, no seating or area to fish is on Sandy Hook.  People normally just sit on the beach or fish off of the coast line.  When fishermen fish off of the beach, they put other people at risk.  Children and other people are often swimming in the water, and they can get in the way.  Also, people cannot always see the scenery as well from down on the beach.  Something is needed to give the fishermen a place to fish and others a place to relax, not on the sand.

            The intended mood of the project is hypothetical.  Plans that are created will not be considered for use, and the entire situation is theoretical.  We have simply been given an assignment to fulfill and complete every step until official steps would normally be taken.  We will not be building anything, with the exception of a model, and we will not be buying anything.  We will create plans and layouts of what will go on, and contact the appropriate people to obtain any information we may need.  Nothing will come from this project except the knowledge of how using green materials and ways can lead to a better planet.

            The Asbury Park Boardwalk is similar in idea to the proposed idea of an eco-friendly promenade.  They have used old parts of shipyards to construct their shops and storage units on the boardwalk, as well as bathrooms and covered areas.  In Michigan, government officials have decided to rebuild boardwalks in Grand Traverse County.  They are using materials made from reused black locust lumber.  Many groups around the country, and world, are realizing the impacts of ignoring the environment.  By switching to environmentally friendly materials near the water, we can begin to change the way we live as a whole.
